what are the implications of turning off Distant land? I know my performance increases - is there a sweet-spot setting to prevent distant weirdness with Distant land off?

My way of thinking is I don't mind a mist shrouded Morrowind and long distance landscapes don't do a lot for me except hurt FPS. Specifically, I think Vanilla Morrowind was designed with limited distant viewing for a plethora of reasons...

These days, if you've got distant terrain disabled, the in-game slider won't let you increase the viewing distance far enough to see cells that aren't loaded. Technically if you leave distant terrain enabled, but disable object paging (which we wouldn't recommend as having object paging in the active grid helps, too), you can increase the viewing distance and there'll be the ground as far as you can see, but there won't be any non-ground objects in the distant cells.

That's good for me -performance is really great for me compared to Oldwind, but I'm just trying to find the sweet spot settings for when I get to places like Sadrith Mora which is choppy for me. I've minimized my use of heavy mods but I have a lot of mods built around BCOM - Project Atlas Vanilla + Mesh improvements, etc. So far, this seems to be my optimal settings:

Just to reiterate, you'll likely get better performance with a short viewing distance but distant terrain, object paging and active grid object paging all left on than you would with the dame viewing distance and those settings disabled.

That seems counter intuitive to me - but I understand that doesn't mean it's not so - but the catch for me is that I notice less halting cell loads/background game music disruptions when I have these settings:

The gist of the reason is that part of object paging means merging lots of tiny draw calls into larger ones when we can, and that means the GPU driver spends less time telling the GPU to draw things. You can't have it enabled in the active grid unless it's enabled in the first place, and it also requires distant terrain to be enabled because of how it works.

OK, I have enabled it - I still get slower loading times, jerky loading screen audio and longer game exit times, but in game world is fine.

Well...perhaps, that seems dubious to me though - and I've not ran into that issue ever. I did finally resolve my issues and figured out what works best for my system.

Distant Land and preloading stuff totally kills my already low FPS due to memory usage - my processor/ssd are fast enough to handle and load stuff as I need it but attempting to carry all the extras is way too much and makes the game a slideshow.

I now get smooth gameplay of 25 FPS in interiors and 11-15 FPS - the key word here is smooth - no hesitant choppy pauses - just smooth and responsive game. ;)

I keep my viewing distance under 1.5 cells and never have pop-ins. and my Morrowind is mist covered as it is supposed to be - back when I first played it upon release on the original XBOX - at least my tator PC runs it better than the XBOX did lol. The game looks far better as well.

While I miss the SSD of my other PC - the overall performance is remarkably better by 15 FPS or more and I have been able to use Distant Land at 5 Cells and more. Smooth as butter and also more shaders active as well:

So - the key is if you have memory starved system like my older PC - Distant Land and Preloading (as I detailed in previous posts) are a bad idea because they swamp the small memory even with ZRAM tricks.

In my current system I use both ZRAM and a Swapfile with aggressive swappiness and all seems to spool out without a hitch as I move through the game world. Ebonheart, Vivec, Sadrith Mora are no longer the molasses they once were for me. Also I can use Intelligent Textures and HD Textures for BCOM, OAAB and Tamriel Data as well.

Life is good - at least virtually. :)
