What about simply rotating the moon-and-cog logo 90 degrees so that the crescent is below the cog? It's visually distinct enough that it wouldn't be confused with Morrowind, and yet remains a solid callback to it for those who notice.
I'm also open to doing some mockups if people have some ideas. Logo design is fun, but I need a basic idea to work with. Maybe I could try to make a monogram using the letters "OMW". Hmm, I'm already getting some ideas, but it's late and I have a full day tomorrow. Maybe I can get something up tomorrowind gosh darn it best typo ever I'm leaving that in, but I meant "tomorrow".

Another idea, merging what other's have said... start off with a rotating gear, the O forms in the gear and the M and W fade in with and an underline or a crescent but rotated 90 counter-clockwise to be under the OMW?

I just got great news, hicks233 of nexusmods has agreed to re-license his textures as CC-BY!
He is the creator of:

He even agreed to upload his PSD files. This gets me thinking that we'll have to have two openmw-template: one ready to use with OpenMW and one for working with the original material.

I'm more than happy for you to make use of the textures. The meshes are I think adjusted version of Bethesda originals by another modder but the textures are all original.
If you need the .psd files that I made the .dds textures to work from I can send them also.

Some basic logo designs. (Apparently it's a bit too wide, so you have to scroll over to see all the horizontal logo.)
I haven't done much animation before, but I could experiment with an animated logo for a title screen.

You know, that is pretty good too... have the gear spinning counter-clockwise and the MW spinning clockwise. Then feather it out from left to right for the OMW where the O keeps spinning.

BTW, with the new moons code going in, we have two misses:
Failed to open texture: Resource 'textures/tx_masser_full.dds' not found
Failed to open texture: Resource 'textures/tx_secunda_full.dds' not found
Anyone seen any nice replacements anywhere?
Eventually we'll have to de-hardcode this... no moon, one moon or many moons none of which should have the names masser and secunda.
