Daedric Font

Post by pvdk »

I'm pleased to announce Georg Duffner made an open-source Daedric font for us!

It's done entirely from scratch, by eyeballing the original font and the one Dongle made for the missing characters in the original. Georg Duffner is the author of the EB Garamond we currently use in the launcher and used for OpenMW too, before scrawl implemented Morrowind .fnt format support.

Here's what it looks like (click on it for a bigger image):

The font is licensed under the SIL Open Font License and the code can be found here. An OpenType Font version can be found in the builds directory, here.

Worn Version
Now the font isn't entirely done yet, there will also be a worn version, but for that I need someone who can load this font into an image manipulation program and apply a worn text effect to it, which Georg can then retrace. It should look a bit like the original font.

Font Name
Also, we need a good name for this one, since Daedric is not a Runic alphabet its name is currently wrong. I would really like to hear your suggestions. Something lore-related would be great.

Well it is the daedric language. Or its called Oblivion.

I suggest you call it Cataclysm, since that is related to the word oblivion and it sounds cool. haha

The Ultima font is called Avatar, named after the hero fo the series:

I'm not very proficient in Elder Scrolls lore, so I don't know if there is a central type of Daedra chacter. Otherwise, I'd just go for Open Daedric or something similarly simple ("Open" to differentiate it from the other existing daedric font). Oblivion would be a term then summarizes the daedra nature of the font, but I wouldn' want to use a regular English word as the name of a font.

The worn version could be a specific "typeface" (if that's the right term) of it, just like bold or italic.
