TES IV: Oblivion

Post by bradleybrand »

OpenMW is beautiful for enhancing and bring TES III: Morrowind to modern hardware. I do not know of any possible limitations, but could we see a tool for the TES IV: Oblivion, which seems to have many crashes.

OpenOb - Open Oblivion. A stable game engine to prevent frequent crashes. Loading all the TES IV: Oblivion content into it. Graphical settings and enhancements. Mod support.

This has always been on the roadmap, and predates the decision to call OpenMW OpenMW, and have OpenMW working with Morrowind first. Some progress has been made - you can see some of cc9cii's experiments on YouTube, and while those haven't been done in a way that's ameniable to being merged with the main project, Capo's gradually been working on Nif support from later engine versions and other people have done some initial work on loading ESM4 data.

Old thread, I know. I checked out that YouTuber and he posted a video 5 days ago of 'minor progress'. So we can't expect to see OpenOb anytime soon sadly, but I appreciated the hard work of 'em all. :)

It's remarkable the progress that's been made since your OP.

The first screenshot of Oblivion areas being loaded into OpenMW proper are from Jan 2023. But now even FO3, FNV, and FO4's assets are widely able to be loaded with OpenMW. No gameplay or mechanics have been implemented yet. But it's really cool to think how much has been made and the hard work it's taken.
