Yaaaay good job everyone! Finally an end to this long, crazy journey!

I should be graduated by the time 0.46 rolls around, so I should have plenty of time to devote to the next release. And hopefully we can get some process changes in by then!

So I guess we have a challenge. Can we make a good enough 0.46 release while Raevol is still a student? Do we have to trick him into doing a PhD to do so?

I think there is more than enough material now to start working on a video. That would make it less of an issue later. I think beginning work at the beginning of the RC process is already too late for how much work goes in the videos. They are amazing and deserve not to be rushed and nor a reason to delay a release. :)

You're technically right, but there's a bit more to this: First of all, I don't have the time to continuously work on the videos - it may seem like a zero-sum game at first glance, yet it is much less time-consuming to produce them more or less in one go (not even mentioning those tasks which shouldn't be split, e.g., voice recording or cutting). Secondly, there are one or more narratives in a video, grouping and linking the different scenes. Apart from special features (e.g., shadows), I can only decide how to structure the video when I know the whole list of fixes. Thirdly, I'd need to constantly update my OpenMW installation (including things like settings and player character), and I don't see a reasonable way of doing that on Windows. The six RC builds for 0.45.0 were enough in this regard. Last but not least, I want to work on other OpenMW-related things as well, so I'd rather concentrate on doing these in the development phase.

However, there are some things I'm going to change for the upcoming release:
  • Continuous maintenance of the changelog (including German translation)
  • Pre-release-phase screening and testing of fixes (Visualisable? Interesting? Important?)
  • Task: Streamlining several parts of my video production process

Would taking on apprentices help at all? I mean, you've done a hell of a job on your own, as have everyone before: WeirdSexy and Star-Demon... I'm just wondering if the one-man-show i something we should worry about, think bus-factor.

As I said, waiting for 3 months to release is a bit over the top. Making bug-fix releases isn't a problem (see discussion about Bethesda).

Do you think there is a way to shorten our release cycle down to a month? Anyone have any ideas on what can work on and try?

Plaintext version of the release announcement for PR:

Code: Select all

The OpenMW team is proud to announce the release of version 0.45.0! Grab it from our Downloads Page (https://openmw.org/downloads/) for all operating systems. This release brings yet another horde of bug fixes and several new features, including support for per-group KF animation replacers, 360° screenshots, and the ability to brew a whole stack of a potion at once.

If you haven't tried OpenMW out already, now is the big chance! Bethesda's free giveaway of Morrowind got extended, so you are still able to get Morrowind for free until March 31st! (https://elderscrolls.bethesda.net/en/tes25)

Check out the release video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5vMfYmqOMo) and the OpenMW-CS release video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVztdWo-TNQ) by the illustrious Atahualpa, and see below for the full list of changes.

Well, I decided to take two days off (a.k.a. weekend). Anyway, German subtitles are now available for both videos. I'm going to update the outreach pages as soon as possible.
