Pink SCREEN!

Post by KaylaF16 »

Ok, So first off I love anything elderscrolls and never had an issue with any of the games until recently.

I have my morrowind game (with DLC's) downloaded through steam. A year or two ago it worked without a hitch. Now, it likes to crash on me.

So, looking up solutions I was brought to the attention of Open Morrowind. Awesome!

Looked up on YouTube on how to download it so I can play. Keep in mind I have never done anything like this before. I am a PC gamer but I know nothing on modding or anything of the sort. I am willing to learn, but I know nothing of the lingo.

Anyway, so download goes smoothly, I follow it step by step. Then I go to play the game and the start up is fine, then the title menu comes up and BAM! Pink screen!

Well crap, back to the drawing board. So Looking at forums and support pages and I keep seeing that the pink screen happens because of something to do with S3TC compression? and it not being set right?

OK...so I look up how to do that. Find another support page that talks about odd codes and opening up synaptic and finding a package.

Look guys I know I may sound stupid, but if you all could give me a run down. a step for step on what to do. Ill do it. In fact if you have a video it would be greater.

I'm just a gamer girl who wants to play her morrowind that she has been playing since childhood. Please and thank you for any help you provide.

1. Which operation system do you use?
2. Which GPU and graphics driver do you have?
3. Can you attach openmw.log?

If you platform does not support S3TC for some reason, you can try to use software decompression by setting the OPENMW_DECOMPRESS_TEXTURES environmental variable to 1.

1. Windows 7 Ultimate
2. (I think) Main Driver: igdumd64.dll,igd10umd64.dll and Intel? Sorry.
3. And how do I find the logs? Only thing I can find close to that in my openmw file is changelog.

and how would I do the last thing you said if it is not supported? Again I apologize for my lack of knowledge

Your openmw.log should be located in C:\Users\{UserName}\Documents\My Games\OpenMW folder.
This file should contain some info about what is going wrong.

Most of modern videocards can decompress textures on hardware level. If your video card or driver (Intel, as you said) can not decompress them for some reason, you can tell your central processing unit to decompress textures (software decompression), but performance can degrade a bit.
Here is a video about setting environmental variables on Windows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEroNNzqlF4
Again, here we assuming that the issue is really the S3TC decompression.

I had a temporary issue at one point where OSG wasn't detecting that my laptop's integrated graphics had the necessary extension to support S3TC, even though it was supposed to. I don't remember how I resolved it, but the hardware does support S3TC natively.

here are the logs. I had to screen shot as I did not know how to attach files. Looking at them myself it does seem like it is the S3TC.

At least one of those screenshots is messed up, so maybe your computer/graphics driver/graphics hardware is just unwell in general.

Maybe try reinstalling your graphics driver.

in your opinion what would be the best way to do so? Is there a website I can go to to reinstall my driver?

You can use driconf to force S3TC support detection.
