I'm pretty sure Oblivion is supposed to allow archives for replacers but has bugs with archive invalidation, which there are workarounds for. Most mod managers have at least one of these workarounds built into them.

As far as I know, even with these solutions it is not possible to use BSAs as replacers because the game doesn't know which one is supposed to take priority. I I even read that it can cause CTDs to have the same file exist in two or more BSAs: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php? ... ?p=4027407

What's to stop the OpenMW engine from implementing this, and taking say the lowest listed BSA as priority, as it does with data folders?

If everything's working, Oblivion (and other games using basically the same version of Gamebryo, such as Fallout New Vegas) should read the archives specified in the .ini in increasing priority from left to right, and then, with even higher priority, any archives with names matching those of esp files in order of the esp priority (which is determined either by another .ini file, which might actually have been a new thing with Skyrim, or if not by their last modified dates).

I know the majority of archive problems with Oblivion weren't fixed in New Vegas, and in my install of that, I have replacer archives which work (although I also have a few which don't, leading to a lot of raiders having boxer shorts on their chests).
