well,

although OpenMW is bascily MW clone (only better) OpenCS is not the clone of CS. We are not gonna mimic CS but instead make a new design.

Icons are not actually obligatory, but we want to make better use of drag-and-drop features, and icons are gonna be used to display records you are moving.

I'm drawning icons using inkscape, that is vector graphic. I have nothing against mixing vector and raster images (in fact i want to convert svgs it to bitmaps, eventually) but I must admit that these icons really don't follow current style…

So what is the current style? I was not aware that you have already chosen a style.
Are you in charge of the icons? I would'nt mind if you find someone else to do this, just offered a option ;)

Ah now I see! I see that I actually don't understand :P
You said you want to convert those into bitmaps later - how do you imagine to have recognisable 22x22 pixel versions of these rather detailed vectors?
I dont think that scaling down a detailed picture into a good pixel icon will work out very well.
Also you go for a rather artistic style instead of a practical, minimalistic one as it seems. That is something I don't really agree with in the case of small icons. Probably we won't get to consensus about the style and I better stick with my other projects. At least I tried :)

Not so fast.

In fact my expirence in icon making is equal zero. I took this task only because nobody else wanted to do it. If you can do it better there is no problem for me.

I hope I didnt sounded rude due to my bad english! My experience with icon or even interface design is also very limited and I didnt meant to critisise your icons.

I am just a little bit confused as I am not so sure if we are limited to 22x22 pixels or if its maybe even possible to have un-rastered vectors as icons? I dont know nothing about those technical details. I do know how to paint on a decent level tho, be it with Illustrator or Photoshop. Pixel design is a very specialised design job tho, and I am not certain if I am able to create distinctive icons for easily confusable items like probes and lockpicks on a canvas with 22x22 pixels.

Have you considered color coded icons with letters for the '3b' icons? Like those great icons for the adobe suite: http://interactiveblend.com/blog/wp-con ... or_cs6.jpg

I will see what I can do and report back in case I come up with something. Are there screenshots of the current interface around? Is the button itself part of the icon or can I use the whole space for the pictograms? If you provide the button, how does it look? Is there a list of collected ideas on how to visalise certaint icons? As I said: I dont know nothing about the technical requirements - I am into printed media :|

No. Everything is fine.
or if its maybe even possible to have un-rastered vectors as icons?
Sure. There are completly svg icon themes for linux, like elementary icons.

Actually I want to bother use bigger icons but it's not me who decides.

Actually not bad, but not sure if we can create so many icons this way.

We do not bother with buttons right now. I have some ideas for visual metaphors but I didn't posted it.

Only linux or is that possible on all platforms?

So whats the opinion about that kind of button I have shown earlier? I would like to have it that way unless the buttons will be defined by the interface in the future. The pictograms I have shown are ugly. I looked through a few icons in 3d max and they managed to do stuff with 16x16 wich I thought wouldnt be possible http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j3GzMyOBNcE/T ... erface.jpg
I write to much ... I will try to make something the next days.

What was I thinking mentioning this company in a open source comunity
Crappy company or not, they have the best software (in my opinion) and the workflow within the Creative Suite is unmatched and a lot of fun.

Edit: just to show the button-style shape:

I think that button background is bad idea, but you may think about other sort of background. First of we should consider workflow. Do you want to make all icons by yourself or work together with me?

I suspect that you can use svg icons with qt on all systems but I never checked.s

I am not even sure yet if I am capable of that task, let's talk about that again one I delivered at least one proper icon :)
I would appreciate if you could post those ideas you mentioned earlier tho.
