For new and upcoming OpenMW branches and ports; move fast and break things!
Since the first thing the engine would have to do would be read the .esm file, you would need to go back to square one. since this engine also lacks various elements like manual blocking and such, it wouldnt be any harder to just start from scratch. But to answer your question, i dont know if the current .esm reader could be modified to read the second gen esm files from the latter games or not. TES4 and TES5 reading is already being worked on cc9cii's OpenMW branch... I mean, there are videos of his work showing OpenMW and OpenMW-CS running around Oblivion/Skyrim/Fallout3
