Essential Mods?

Post by Kael »

As the title goes. Any essential mods usable in OpenMW? Links/Latest Files? Maybe we can collectively compile a list.

First of all, every Morrowind mod which is
  • is a pure replacer or a modification created with the original Construction Set,
  • doesn't rely on third-party software or other engine hacks,
  • doesn't contain any severe scripting errors or other crucial design flaws,
should be compatible with OpenMW. If not, there is most likely an error on OpenMW's side.

Then, what do you mean by "essential"? We have a Mod Status Wiki page which lists mods that were tested in OpenMW. I've recently overhauled the page to give more detailed information about incompatible utilities (like MWSE or MGE). Apart from these third-party programs, most bigger mods should be compatible with OpenMW (e.g., Tamriel Rebuild or Morrowind Rebirth).

You could always take your personal list of essential mods or another player's favourite mod list and start testing every mod in there to help us iron out bugs in our engine. Make sure to report your findings on our Wiki page, on our bug tracker if necessary, and, if you like, in a dedicated forum thread. The appropriate subforum would be "Mod Compatibility".

I'm working on a list of mods I consider to be essential to the game, none of them include graphical enhancements. These are the ones I have right now:
  • better governing attributes
  • birthsigns are more fun
  • tribunal Delayed
  • graphic herbalism
  • hospitality papers
  • linora's levelling mod
  • master index
  • races are more fun
  • real signposts
  • speechcraft rebalanced
Maybe you can add some more?

The first works OK, and about the second...

...in a detailed fashion in the ReadMe.

This mod was playtested extensively and is fully compatible with OpenMW.

There's too many awesome mods to name. The easiest way to get a heavily modded setup going is to use Morrowind Overhaul.

(It generally isn't published on the modding sites because they didn't use proper etiquette in terms of consulting all the innumerable mod authors.)

But the bare essentials are

- Morrowind Patch Project
- UMOPP
- Better Heads

And until the engine gets optimized more, be careful about grass mods and keep the water shaders off.

The original heads may hold a certain charm, but the thousands of endorsements for Better Heads clearly shows that not everyone shares this perspective.
