Stop rain/snow from falling through pieces of environment?

Post by Patali »

A very popular mod for Skyrim, and a native feature of the new 64 bit version, is a feature that stops rain and snow effects from going through objects, such as awnings on buildings, cliff overhangs, etc. It is something that dramatically (imo) increases immersion, and is a must have feature/mod for that game.

Based on what you guys understand of the open engine, is this something that'd be possible to implement? And if it isn't feasible, would it theoretically be possible in the future with the implementation of a new weather system, as a built in feature?

Incredible project guys. Thanks for all the hard work you do for this amazing game, and I hope in years to come this project only makes it possible to grow exponentially greater.

It was possible in the original engine with MCP for a while - before Fallout 4 was released.

It's definitely possible to implement, but it's not priority right now.

We already have a feature request for this on our bugtracker: Rain physics.
(Not that anyone is working on that right now but you're not the only one who wants that feature.)

Chris also already came up with an idea on how this should be done

Skyrim Special Edition's rain occlusion is surprisingly good. Cozy up to a wall and you'll find it also occludes blizzards that blow sideways. Just what is needed for Morrowind's many ash storms.

Indeed it is. I was really impressed the other day when walking between Winterhold and Dawnstar during heavy snowing.

So it's basically the same solution Chris proposed in the other thread?

Nah, probably not. Skyrim SE's solution is probably more advanced (and performance heavy). But this is just me speculating.

A top-down projection doesn't sound like it can account for particles blowing sideways, for one thing.
