OpenMW Included in the main game?

Post by archmage24601 »

The cool thing about OpenMW (imho) is it open Morrowind up to Mac and Linux users. Is there a way for Bethesda (since the project is open source) to use the project and create an official update for the game so it can be listed under mac and linux on GOG and Steam?

If this is posted in the wrong place, please let me know and I apologize.

OpenMW's GPL licence more or less allows anyone to do anything with OpenMW, as long as whenever they provide compiled binaries, they link to the source code of said binaries (if you release a modified version, you need to make its source code available), and any derivative source code needs to be released under the same GPL licence (you can't ban other people from using your modifications in their own projects if you let them use it as it's provided, and you can't allow them to do things with it that they couldn't do with the code it's based off).

Basically, Bethesda could start bundling Morrowind with OpenMW tonight, but if they changed it in any way, for example to add new features or fix bugs, they'd need to make it possible for regular OpenMW to include these changes. Large companies tend to not like code they wrote becoming public, and as well as this, they might want to implement something with a library (a good example is SpeedTree, which was used for foliage in Oblivion) which isn't compatible with the GPL.
