Ubuntu Releases

Post by psi29a »

Since Quantal (12.10) now has Ogre 1.8 and bullet 2.80 in their repos officially, we (k1ll and myself) starting ripping out the static parts so that OpenMW can build against the dynamic libraries. That means that the only package left that isn't included in Ubuntu by default is mygui.

So hurray, OpenMW on Quantal!

We also discussed support for older releases. According to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ub ... f_versions
The End of Life (EoL) has come for the following:
09.04 Lucid (as of April 2013)
10.10 Maverick (earlier this year)
11.04 Natty (as of end of October 2012)

We propose to drop support for the above, Lucid because it is almost EoL and is replaced by Precise as LTS. It also has no multi-arch support which makes maintance for us a pain in the neck each release. Maverick is also not multi-arch, but is EoL anyway. Natty will EoL end of the month.

This makes less work for us and I hope doesn't hurt anyone. If you ARE effected, then I suggest a 'legacy' program (do it yourself) for those that wish to continue support for these releases, but we (k1ll and myself) will be hands-off.

What do you guys think?

I agree.

But are you really ripping out the static parts or just disabling them? Depending on how much work they are, it might be wise to do the later. It could easily happen that we have to move to a new version of OGRE, in which case I assume it would be back to static building.

It is just disabling, removing a few cmake arguments. The work is already done as we have Quantal builds on launchpad. :)

If we need to go back, it will be trivial to do so (now that we know how to do it). Static ogre and bullet builds still exists for Oneiric until Precise. If we need to move to a newer version of bullet, ogre or whatever... we just continue on what we were doing.

As of today, we (k1ll and I) no longer maintain/support Lucid, Maverick and Lucid.

If anyway wishes to support Lucid until it's effective EoL in April 2013, they may do so and we can provide guidance.

They can also compile it themselves from source, but I do not expect any 'special' treatment for release specific bugs (i.e. older or outdated libs).

Hi I'm an Debian Developer that just found out about openmw and am impressed. Whenever you'd like to get it in Debian/Ubuntu, I'd be happy to help and sponsor.

In the meantime, I can get mygui into Debian/Ubuntu. I have an initial test package of mygui here:
https://launchpad.net/~showard314/+archive/ppa

Let me know if it works for you:

I've sent a reply back, we'll see about getting this ball rolling.

So OpenMW is finally "a thing". 8-)

obviously k1ll will be involved too.

OK... it is coming up on that time of the year that we cull the heard.

The following Ubuntu releases will become EoL, and thus we will no longer provide packages for are below.

Version Code name Release date End of life date
Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander October 2013 July 2014
Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail April 25, 2013 January 2014
Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal October 18, 2012 April 2014

Raring is the first on our list.
