is OpenMW restricted to .bik video files?

is OpenMW restricted to .bik video files, or can I use any video format, like .mkv or .mp4?
For example, if I create my own version of mw_intro.bik or mw_cavern.bik, can I use other formats? Since I'm on Linux, I cannot create a .bik file.

If I remember right, OpenMW loads only .bik but however there is a workaround if rename a file(that is supported by both FFMPEG and your device) to .bik it loads.

Okay, just tested it out and it works.

Download this with youtube-dl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtFkIdanNEs, renamed the file to mw_intro.bik and it runs on OpenMW.

However, since I'm unable to test this on Windows, can this work on Windows? When I make my own version of the Morrowind Intro, I'd like to upload this to Morrowind Nexus, so I have to know if this will work for OpenMW users on Windows.

OpenMW supports any video (music or whatever) format that ffmpeg supports.

the 'bik' extension is read from the configuration file... you can modify mw_intro.bik to read your_own_video.mp4 and it would look for your_own_video.mp4 and play that.

The default of course is still mw_intro.bik

I've created this video as a replacement for the Cavern of the Incarnate cinematic. It was saved as mw_cavern.mkv and I renamed it mw_cavern.bik for use in OpenMW.

I've placed it in $HOME/My Games/OpenMW/basedata/Data Files/Video/.

How do I test if this video will work on OpenMW? I've already past the Cavern of the Incarnate quest and I don't have a save game from before that anymore. Is there a console command to play the video?
