Someone is trying to fund development of openMW on Kickstarter under the title of "openMW Overhaul Project". Is this legit? Is this you guys? Don't know if this sort of thing is allowed or not, but I thought I should let you know.

We are not associated with that Kickstarter project. We don't endorse that project either.

Is there anything you can do about it? I'm not registered on Kickstarter so I can't report them. But I don't know if it's right to anyway. What control do you have over this?

Re: Funding on Kickstarter. Is this legit?
Depending on how trademarked 'OpenMW' is, we might have grounds to make him stop putting it in the title of his thing. Another option is to ask him politely to put something in the description clarifying that it's a mod pack and not part of the engine itself.
Re: Funding on Kickstarter. Is this legit?
He seems to take great exception to people charging money for their mods, while at the same time trying to shill a collection of old mods on kickstarter. The mods listed seem to be used based on a very open interpretation of phrases like e.g. "free to redistribute" etc. He also claims to have spent over 1000 hours working on Morrowind, but most of the things listed seem like something I remember coming from an existing mod. The lack of content on the kickstarter page, and the subsequent link to openMW, make it seem like he's trying to fool potential backers into thinking that's his work.
You should read the project documents on https://sites.google.com/site/openmwop/
Particularly the rant about "Generosity Trolls" in Forbidden Content.pdf
See also:
New Functions and Features Included.pdf (for a list of things that I'm sure aren't new)
Project Supporters.pdf (for an admission that he's been shut down for this before)
It's quite alarming.

Re: Funding on Kickstarter. Is this legit?
There was a thread about him a couple of weeks back, and a bunch of people claimed he stole mods they made without permission. He actually showed up in the thread and denied it, and then had a bit of a rant, then got told off. A few of us explained what he needed to change in order to stop breaking the law, he claimed he wasn't breaking the law, and then some people explained how he was, in fact, breaking the law. I'm not sure if anything happened beyond that, but the hope was that he'd stop breaking the law and we could go back to ignoring him.

Nothing changes until someone(s) start telling kickstarter about it, especially the author's of the mods themselves. They have final say because it is their copyright.
