As you can see on the video, the computer has totally frozen, the ingame music stuck, the computer clock is also stuck, the mouse and keyboard are also unresponsive, making me unable to use the Alt+Sys Rq+REISUB command to safely reboot my PC.

Here's the specs of my computer:
-Computer-
Processor: 2x AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+
Memory: 3099MB
Operating System: Xubuntu 16.04.2 LTS
-Display-
Resolution: 1600x900 pixels
OpenGL Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on NV96
X11 Vendor: The X.Org Foundation
-Multimedia-
Audio Adapter: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia

Such an extreme lockdown is sign of hardware problems. Try some other stressful programs like mprime or FurMark to see if it happens again.

These are the tests I've done on my system, let me know what you think?

The freezes happen whenever the game is trying to load an area, but I have preload enabled though:

Code: Select all

[Cells]

# Adjacent exterior cells loaded (>0). Caution: this setting can
# dramatically affect performance, see documentation for details.
exterior cell load distance = 1

# Preload cells in a background thread. All settings starting with 'preload' have no effect unless this is enabled.
preload enabled = true

# The number of threads to be used for preloading operations.
preload num threads = 1

# Preload adjacent cells when moving close to an exterior cell border.
preload exterior grid = true

# Preload possible fast travel destinations.
preload fast travel = false

# Preload the locations that doors lead to.
preload doors = true

# Preloading distance threshold
preload distance = 1000

# Controls whether or not the nodes/collision shapes are pre-"instanced" (i.e. cloned) when a cell is preloaded.
# Enabling this option slightly reduces the time it takes to transition into a preloaded cell, but also results in higher memory usage
# proportional to the number of cells that are preloaded.
preload instances = true

# The minimum amount of cells in the preload cache before unused cells start to get thrown out (see "preload cell expiry delay").
# This value should be lower or equal to 'preload cell cache max'.
preload cell cache min = 12

# The maximum amount of cells in the preload cache. A too high value could cause you to run out of memory.
# You may need to reduce this setting when running lots of mods or high-res texture replacers.
preload cell cache max = 20

# How long to keep preloaded cells in cache after they're no longer referenced/required (in seconds)
preload cell expiry delay = 5

# How long to keep models/textures/collision shapes in cache after they're no longer referenced/required (in seconds)
cache expiry delay = 5

What is the system requirements for distant terrain?

It looks like my computer cannot handle distant terrain, it seems disabling distant terrain has ceased the freezing.

How much ram do you have installed? When your system 'freezes' is the HD light on? It could indicate that you're swapping out to disk when your ram is full.

With distant-land enabled on my side, it chews through memory. After wondering around the map a bit, openmw used up to 6.2 GiB of ram. It took more than 30 seconds to 'quite', I think through memory deallocation.

About 4GB RAM, which is the maximum for this machine, so I guess my machine isn't powerful enough for distant terrain, I guess that fine, my computer is almost 10 years old.

I'm not sure what or where the HD light is though?

Take a look at your memory usage (top and press m). I'm assuming that you're swapping out to disk.

@scrawl: what do you think? swap problem?

I have 3GB and can have distant terrain on. I have to really limit the amount of preloading though, as that's an extreme memory hog. I also have to avoid running other memory-intensive apps at the same time, things like Chrome and Firefox (I've actually switched to Pale Moon, which is a fork of Firefox that among other things uses less memory; a freshly started Firefox sitting at about:blank uses about 285MB RAM, while Pale Moon after some use with a couple tabs open is sitting at about 200MB).

What is all this memory used for? If I look at the vanilla mw installation, it is just about 1.2GB large.
