What's in your settings.cfg? Are there errors in openmw.log?

NiTextureEffect (reflection) is still not implemented in OpenMW, right? It says in the bug tracker that it is not used much in the game, which is correct, but a lot of mods use it, though I believe most of them to make the fake bump mapping of the Morrowind Code patch work. Which is no longer necessary because of the recent implementation of physically-based rendering in MGE XE (it's a separate alpha version besides the "regular" beta version for now, but it's already impressive). And of course it is also not necessary in OpenMW.

I don't know if the missing NiTextureEffect feature is related to your problem in OpenMW, though.

I added environment maps a few minutes ago before reading your post.

The "fake bump map" mods look a little different now (similar to Vanilla w/o code patch, I think).

I don't know what the "fake bump map" option in MCP exactly does and I have no interest in finding out, since we already have real bump mapping. But, if someone figures it out and wants to make a pull request, then go ahead.

I think it's this, under the Added features section here:
Bump/reflect local lighting. Adjusts bump/reflection maps to use local lighting. They will no longer be at full brightness in dark environments.

Yep, that's basically what it looks like in vanilla without MCP. And it's like Chris quoted: In vanilla, reflection maps can kind of use Bump/Normal Maps and can make a surface look kind of bumpy, but they are always at full brightness which makes them glow in dark environments. MCP changes this so they adjust to the local lighting which makes them work somewhat like normal maps, but not really and there is always at least a little bit of reflection. It looks crappy compared to real normal maps and requires mesh editing, but it's what we've got for the last couple of years.

Now with the new MGE-XE-PBR there is finally a better way. Also, as OpenMW has real normal mapping it would be pointless to recreate the MCP behavior for reflection maps. Hopefully, all mods that were using the MCP options will be updated to PBR in time, and Hrnchamd already hinted at the implementation of PBR in OpenMW, so ideally, it will be compatible with all mods that will be using it.

Sorry to chime in but: At P:C we have dozens of objects that use the environmental map purely for intentionally-shiny surfaces like glass or metal, as seen here:

If there is going to be a way to create more up-to-date materials that work equally in openmw and mgexe, I'm sure we'll switch to using it. But for now it is very helpful to see that there is no urgent pressure in updating these particular assets for openmw.

And if the tweak of the mw-codepatch is added in, it will be appreciated, too, as it really improves on the effect and wouldmake the transition towards usage of the modern material techniques more fluent and easier across the mods. These are just my two cents on the matter. I'm happy enough that the matter of the environmental effect has been looked into, at all.
