OpenMW Benchmarks

Post by Jyby »

We've come a long way since the first playable builds of the OSG port for OpenMW. As OpenMW matures, performance benchmarks will be increasingly useful to developers who are optimizing and improving the fidelity of the engine. In this thread you can help the developer team improve the game by reporting how well your machine stacks up to OpenMW. Additionally, feel free to provide details on any observations you make in regards to the performance of OpenMW, but please limit discussion to what currently exists in the game.

Here is the template:

OpenMW version:
Operating System: (version and its architecture, for example 64-bit)
CPU model: (and its frequency)
RAM amount: (and its frequency)
Video card model: (and its memory amount)
Resolution used:
How it runs: (number of FPS or explaination of how the game runs)
Additional info: (optional)

Code: Select all

OpenMW: the latest git version: 0.36.1 Revision: 49df6b7450
OS: gentoo Linux AMD64 (openrc, not linvchost)
CPU: corei7-870, max 3,3 GHz (probably what's used when playing) min 1,2 GHz
RAM: 12G (meminfo reports 11G) @ 1333 MHz
graphics card: Cypress PRO [Radeon HD 5850] # 1GB DDR5 RAM # PCI-E 2.0
resolution: 1920x1200
game runs: smooth

Code: Select all

"benchmarks": Balmora, moving from Caius to the (river) bridge when you almost reach the bridge looking at the other side of the river (an NPC walking there) it's >=35 fps. # stays between 45 and 52 fps after moving over the bridge # at the "shops level" ~60 # in front of the temple 70-80 (all: outside and running at 1000 speed). For "./openmw --skip-menu" I get ~110-160 fps (just looking straight, not moving)

settings: video/water/shadow all "on", FOV 60, trilin. filtering, 16x anisotropy, max view distance (, 4K texture size)
misc: multi monitor setup, #2 @ 1280x1024, same video card, shows Konsole
kernel: 3.13.6 SMP x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHz GNU/Linux
graphics driver: x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati ver 7.5.0 (open source driver)

  • OpenMW version: Latest, 7b954e8cc3
  • Operating System: Archlinux 64bit, gnome-shell/x11, proprietary nvidia drivers.
  • CPU model: Intel Core i3-4150 CPU @ 3.5GHz
  • RAM amount: 3900MiB
  • Video card model: GeForce GTX 660 (2GB)
  • Resolution used: 1920x1080
  • How it runs:Very good : ~270 fps on --skip-menu, 90fps on Balmora + rain(100fps without rain)
  • Additional info: Fov : 70, trilinear with anisotropy 3, maximum draw distance
Look like to run OpenMW well, a good CPU isn't as important as a good GPU. Not surprising.

We should probably define a few standard places to take a benchmark since it can vary so much. An indication of whether you are running modded or not would be helpful too.

Feature request: --benchmark flag

That way Phoronix can use OpenMW for his openbenchmark suite. :)

OpenMW version: 0.36.1
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
CPU model: Intel Core i5 4690K 4GHz
RAM amount: 8GBs 1332Hz
Video card model: AMD 6770 1GB
Resolution used: 1680x1050
How it runs:

I am running texture packs, FOV set to 90 and currently got all fancy video options turned off or set to their lowest level. Max draw distance however.

Indoors, for example Balmora Fighter's Guild I never drop below 100fps however when I step out into Balmora my minimum FPS is 40, max of 80, average seems to be around 50fps maybe. If I stand on the silt strider stand and look over Cammona Tong building I get 50fps.

MSI Afterburner shows that I'm using average of 40% of my GPU outside and at most 350MB of VRAM. CPU1 is maxed out while the other 3 cores are either flat lining or have very occasional spikes up to about 40%. RAM usage was about 3GBs.

---------------

I've still got a "new" GTX 770 sitting around waiting to be installed so I'll try that tonight.

----------------

Tried the new 770 - everything else the same. Seem to be getting the exact same result, about 40-50fps. When on the silt strider looking over Cammona Tong building I get 50fps.

Not sure where to download 0.37 for Windows

Try 0.37... from git master or from the nightlies.
