Donation

Post by RedDaemonfox »

I'd like to make a contribution to this project. Not much, but still I know from donation work that every bit helps. Can anyone advise me on how to donate?

We don't need donations, but you can help us by spreading the word about OpenMW to your friends, colleagues etc. :)

If they ever did do donation, with the way the project is going now... I think they could raise a decent amount on kickstarter. The multi platform crowd would be all for it. Heck then they could possibly have enough money to not only hire people but, port to ARM.

The funny thing is that if we would do a kickstarter campaign, my guess is we would multiply the attention this project gets by a BIG number, I've seen some amazing things on kickstarter with projects that involves old games, so my guess is OpenMW is just right for the community. So talking about that BIG number, I mean HUGE!.
Problem is OpenMW isn't accepting money, so because we won't take people's money, we won't gain popularity, it's quite ironic :). (Don't get me wrong, I'm positive on not accepting donations).

What comes next is purely fiction:

We could make a fake kickstarter campaign in which the money goal is set so high we will never reach it and the money will never be donated (unfamiliar with kickstarter? Money will be subtracted from the backer's bank account after the campaign time limit IF the campaign reaches it goal).
So, who's in for this shit?

The problem here is that then Bethesda may object to this project and the name would need changing and all this other stuff.
If something really wanted to be done, Bethesda's lawyers would need to give an official statement on the issue.

Maybe but, OMW has a REALLY good legal standing already, all home brew code and no means of playing the game with out playing. as long as it was "marketed" as mod (and that wouldn't be a first time on KS) I think you should be pretty good. Plus with something that is aiming to bring the a game to mac and linux while abiding all the rules only to have Bethesda threaten legal action, would only bring Bethesda bad PR.

No, no it doesnt. The name Morrowind is a trademarked name(or something similiar) and they did not come up with a legal contract with Bethesda to use it. The fact that Bethesda allows them to use it is simply because they allow alot of leeway on such things. Everything starts changing when you add money in.
Now, if they were to change the name, then sure, they could readily accept money for this. But that would kind of defeat the whole point here.

Then i would change the name to OpenMW, not open morrowind, openMW, even then that mightn't not work.. They sure do own the name, is any instance you can change the name as you said.

Well money wouldn't totally defeat the purpose if it was to actually bring something to the community, it would have to be purely donation driven as it couldn't be sold.

Open MW is already the real name, not OpenMorrowind. In previous release videos WeirdSexy called the project Open Morrowind but now he's calling is OpenMW to avoid unwanted attention. Bethesda sued Mojang (the company behind Minecraft) over the name of their game "Scrolls", which was ridiculous. OpenMW doesn't want to draw attention from Bethesda's lawyers, even if they are 100% clean. You still have to prove everything is fine and it is just cheaper to avoid problems in the first place.
