Re: Recent Negativity Regarding OpenMW
I think a lot of this stems from you being mistaken about what OpenMW actually is . First and foremost, it's a recreation of the engine from Bethesda's 2002 RPG Morrowind . Getting to a point of feature parity with that engine has always been our primary goal. Once that's been achieved, we can expan...

Re: Shadows
Morrowind's data doesn't have stuff like occlusion planes, so there's no way to tell which things could be culled if it's only because they're behind other objects. It might just be that things are doing more than you think, so instead of it being one effect destroying performance, it might be a las...

Re: 360 degree screenshots?
It's # Type of screenshot to take (regular, cylindrical, spherical or planet), optionally followed by # screenshot width, height and cubemap resolution in pixels. (e.g. spherical 1600 1000 1200) screenshot type = regular and it's in the [Video] section, even though the file format is in the [General...

Re: Constant 60 FPS but annoying micro-stuttering
Press F3 until a bunch of bars appear at the top and post a screenshot showing which one gets bigger during the stutter if you can.

Re: OpenMW’s mb/s data load rate?
The big performance advantage of BA2s over BSAs (both of which come in compressed and uncompressed formats to optimise for different situations) is that texture BA2s hold DDS images based on their content, not as individual files. In the table of file names, there's a pointer to the DDS header (whi...

Re: OpenMW’s mb/s data load rate?
The installation process for Morrowind does that already. If you're using an older CD with CD-based DRM, it only checks the CD is there to check you actually own a CD and doesn't load the game off it. If you're using a newer release of Morrowind like the Steam or GOG version, you don't need a CD at ...

Re: OpenMW’s mb/s data load rate?
By 2025 (provided the memory cartel has been stopped) you should be easily able to fit all of Morrowind's data onto a RAM drive even on a standard desktop, and there's never going to be anything faster than that hardware-wise. Hopefully, we'll have a fast BA2-style archive format by then that Morrow...

Re: OpenMW’s mb/s data load rate?
In a modern game, I'd expect most of the time loading loose files to be spent waiting for the OS to open and close file handles. That's a big part of why BSA and BA2 archives make Bethesda games faster - if you've only got one file, you only need one file handle, with the rest being that these days,...

Re: Recent Negativity Regarding OpenMW
As if half the team isn't going to hang up their hats when 1.0 comes out, like what happens with so many of these type projects... :| Leaving behind a skeleton crew to attempt to enshrine MGE graphics in the code, a futile effort that will inevitably sputter and fail. I'm pretty sure almost all of ...
