You're probably thinking of MGE, psi29a. MGSO also includes textures and models and whatnot, which are not included with OpenMW. Which you already know, obviously. :P All those crazy acronyms... I'll be honest, I've never played with plugins in Morrowind (or really, with any game). I'm just content...

Everybody has the same issue. The engine simply isn't optimised yet. Optimising is one of the last things you do as I've understood. Since version 1.0 gets closer and closer, we'll hopefully see better performance in a not too distant future.
