Not an OpenMW contributer, but I'd also vote for Lua. Morrowind-script itself can barely be considered a language at all, it is literally just the most basic of basics (if/else/while) - to try and expand it into something modern would be essentially writing your own scripting language from scratch. ...

MWScript was so bad mainly because the compiler (from the original CS) sucks and doesn't tell you about some errors. Also it placed unnecessary limits on how you structure yout code.
