But GPU load is more r less consistent (max 83%, min 58%) and CPU does not go above 20%. I suspect here that you're seeing 20% not from a CPU, but rather 20% across all cores, meaning that it is likely that there is one thread (the draw call) using 100% of 1 core. That's just the painful limitation...

Then perhaps shooting for native GLESv3 support should be a stretch-goal for 0.48 as it would resolve some long standing issues Android as well.

Sooner or later we'll need to switch over to Vulkan, Apple already had the balls drop 32-bit support which cut support for old games. It's only a matter of time before they cut OpenGL support as well. That being said, Linux distros are usually pretty stubborn so OpenGL will be around for another dec...

Quite true, but many of the features that have been added, like Shadows, Lighting, etc are probably not in scope of any initial work on having a 2nd renderer. We also need to have a heart to heart talk with those on macOS and the future of OpenMW. It's getting more difficult to develop new features and improve existing ones because of the sad state of OpenGL on macOS. With that sad, we have literally no one developing on macOS; it's purely through testers...
