TLDR: After much pain, frustration and gnashing of teeth - I removed the repo and cleaned up the remaining configs. I added back the repo, verified that it was 48 - reinstalled and lo and behold everything proceeded as a new installation. Everything works, I've load up my mod list (mostly Rebirth) and have updated my Navmesh cache. All is well, but it was a long day of circular disappointments.
I have had plenty of issues today starting from an update that fouled my working install of 48 - so at present a clean install of 48 is what I seek to achieve.
For some reason, OPENMW is not allowing for a clean fresh install. Why is it looking for config files? It has my Steam Data File directory and everything else I will setup again from scratch. I suspect OPENMW is not removing itself cleanly or something, I scrubbed all traces I could find using locate and Synaptic Package Manager.
When I skip the wizard, the game runs up with a load screen image, just a brown or purplish screen and then I can't use the onscreen menu to exit the game and have to ALT+F4. (Presently, I just drop to desktop, CTD - log posted below.)

This really makes it hard to troubleshoot a problem if I can't reset my installation completely. What other files is OPENMW using that keeps me locked in a loop?
