My thoughts thus far on OpenMW Mod Installation - in Linux

Post by Cl3v3rP0tat0 »

LINUX <------ context of post

For a brief time, I had OpenMW running a full mod list imported via ModOrganizer2 OpenMW plugin. cleaned with Tes3CMD and fully patched with Tes3Merge - but that was in Windows 10. I had some errors with meshes involving a few mods but was very happy with OpenMW's performance overall. But, ditched Windows 10 completely and installed Linux Mint on my meager AIO Walmart PC from 2018 Image ;)
- this was an overall upgrade in performance and usability but a big step back in Morrowind Mod Management.

So far, I have realized "manual" modding with OpenMW Dev/48+ is reasonably straightforward and frankly - simple - which is great! But the key deficiencies are are Mod Cleaning, Patching and Sorting.

Mod Load Ordering:
As a longtime MO2 user, it's a bit rough to face modding without all those conveniences but I do like not having to mess with the virtual file system quirks. I made on attempt to install MO2 under Wine - meh. a gig of disk space to install one app and it still didn't run after a "seemingly" successful installation.

Then we have Portmod:
Portmod is not approachable and has way too many hurdles to get it running on my Linux install - I appreciate the effort but it's just not ready for regular users to use as a turn-key solution. So, I will let the https://modding-openmw.com/cfg-generator/ assist me in that endeavor.

Patching/Merging:
Looks like Delta Plugin ( https://modding-openmw.com/mods/delta-plugin/ )is the way to go here but I have not used it yet - but instructions are straightforward and I anticipate no formidable issues.

Update to Update: Turns out Bard was wrong, no such thing as a java based Wrye Mash Polemos Fork

Cleaning Mods
This is where I draw a blank - if I could get Wyre Mash running in Linux maybe but I haven't seen anyone talking about that - Wrye Mash used to do a lot neat things from Master Load Order edits to various utility plugin functions like Tes3CMD and MLOX and Tes3Merge.

So, I think I have all my problems addressed except for modcleaning.

UPDATE: I just asked Bard about Wrye Mash and Linux: https://g.co/bard/share/231f90956d76 Seems, like I was clueless...I'll give it a try.
