That should be read-only (read+execute for the directories themselves, actually; only root should have write access). The /usr/share directory is accessible to all users, so individual users shouldn't be able to modify it. Individual users would use their own $HOME/.local/share directory instead.

Also how did you create /usr/share/games/openmw/data? This isn't something I've seen be a problem before.

I'm not sure what you mean by how did I create it. As far as I know, openmw did when I ran the installer.

/usr/share/games/openmw/data is created by pacman when installing the archlinux openmw package.
It's empty, but shouldn't be a problem.

Code: Select all

filesystem::recursive_directory_iterator directory error: Permission denied
This line in the console output may be the cause of the problem :
Adding data directory /home/william/PlayOnLinux's virtual drives/Steam/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Morrowind/Data Files

Even if that's not the cause of the problem , you should't run steam on play on linux on archlinux.
Both POL & Steam are often so far behind archlinux library versions tricks are needed to get them to work.
Combining them makes things so unpredictable troubleshooting becomes near impossible.

post

Code: Select all

pacman -Qs openmw
output please.

I wasn't aware there was any option for playing windows games on Arch other than using playonlinux. It is the only way I know of to get a morrowind.esm. What are you suggesting I do instead?
Output of pacman -Qs openmw:

local/openmw 0.44.0-4
Open-source engine reimplementation for the role-playing game Morrowind

Since you have Steam, you can run the Linux version of Steam and enable Steam Play (aka Proton). You can run vanilla Morrowind from within Linux Steam using Steam Play, which will get you the needed files. Then point OpenMW to where Steam placed the game files.

Surprised I've never heard of this. I'm setting it up now. Fingers crossed I can fix openmw.

No luck :( . Same error. I ran the installation wizard and pointed it to the new folder but no difference.

post pacman -Qkk openmw please.

I am currently busy configuring my new desktop and while I have installed the openmw package I haven't run it yet.
I'll dig up my morrowind gog GOTY files and try to make some time to setup openmw vanilla .
