An option to Hide/Disable the Map

Post by Ehthm » 12 Feb 2016, 07:03

I've found that playing Morrowind and Daggerfall while completely ignoring the world map/automap is, to me, much more satisfying than doing so while relying on them to navigate. It feels harsher but more genuine, and I'd really recommend it to anyone who would risk doing something a bit unorthodox for a potentially more immersive experience. That said, would adding an option in OpenMW to completely prevent their in-game use be a hassle? Would it count as some sort of mod, a thing only to be implemented after the engine is finished?

After the project is inevitably completed, I would love to see a mod replace the Map Menu with something like the Journal, but to display the Map Items' images the player has in their inventory (such as the Guide to Ald'Ruhn.) My tastes are unpopular, however.

Thanks.

There is enablemapmenu, but no disablemapmenu. I think this feature would be cool for smaller games made on OpenMW. I would post it on the bugtracker https://bugs.openmw.org/projects/openmw/roadmap OpenMW Future roadmap. That way it has a chance of getting done eventually.

Oh how I wish Oblivion and Skyrim had detailed enough quest descriptions to not need the quest marker compass thing.

That would be pretty cool! I've recently seen something similar to this that would be super immersive. Some games now have a physical in-world map that your character holds. The two that immediately come to mind are ARK: Survival Evolved, and Firewatch. In Firewatch, you come across maps that have trails and landmarks that you can copy onto your map, but you also discover some things that you mark yourself. Not sure how that would scale to Morrowind since the world is so massive and there's interiors as well, but just a thought. Obviously a very down the road feature.

Here's a link to what I'm talking about. The compass would be a cool touch as well. https://cdn1.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/GP0Vso ... ap.0.0.jpg
