The topic has never come up in conversation (between Bethesda and OpenMW), and I hope it stays that way.
Fund the development of supporting libraries, that makes our lives easier and the end result for users better.

Re: OpenMW 0.37.0 (?)
I wonder how much outrage there would be if I started asking for donations to keep doing the nightlies.

Re: OpenMW 0.37.0 (?)
I'm not sure what you're talking about... care to explain?sjek wrote:........ where was the legal line again ?)
Debian and Ubuntu both ship OpenMW with their distributions... for money. They make money off OpenMW. They are allowed to by law. Their legal advocates gave the OK to allow OpenMW into their repositories and comply with the DSFG[1].
This is an open-source project, legal and free of Bethesda IP. You're free to do what you want within the guidelines of the GPLv3. The law protects that and we're on the right side of it and with Bethesda.
Being paid to work on OpenMW isn't a crime, nor a legal liability.
The point of the project is two fold:
1) Play Morrowind on modern hardware.
2) Be a game engine, that can be used to create your own game.
The two are not mutually exclusively. We use Morrowind as major milestone for #2.
This is why we have OpenMW-Template and OpenMW-Example-Suite initiatives.
So as far as I'm concerned, letting scrawl and others ask for patrons/donations as freelancers is perfectly acceptable. If Lgro wants to do so for hosting the website, cool. Same with Ace in hosting the nightly builds... Nothing says anyone has to do so, it is purely voluntary and feeds infrastructure and development of OpenMW.
It however does _not_ speed up development or get 1.0 out faster.

that's it. felt like needed to clear some air.
althought good for development. with overly marketing or boosting, has it's effect on the environment. what's ethical or right is taste but at least if it's keeping psychologically in good grounds : )
in other words. money can be issue sometimes so not get lost in the hype train

Re: Crowdfunding
I moved the posts here, figured it was the best place for it and not a release thread. Hope you don't mind.
Re: Crowdfunding
This seems a much more reasonable place for it indeed.
And I went ahead and threw a donate link in to the nightly post, just in case.
Though I guess I only really need electricity and some internet connectivity to keep doing my nightly builds, current hosting cost for me is only ~$24 per year.

Re: Crowdfunding
Hi,
if no one has anything against it then I think we could use server founds to cover nightly builds server costs.

Re: Crowdfunding
I would like to have an OpenMW t-shirt! 30$, 10$ for shirt, 20$ for servers and renovating the site.
