Openmw and Skywind

Google SHotN.

Good to read that modders are looking at OpenMW already.heilkitty wrote:Google SHotN.
For the forum topic:
Keep in mind though. We only need vanilla morrowind to be awesome! Tamriel Rebuilt is a prime example of mods built primarily from the original ESMs
Re: Openmw and Skywind
I enjoyed morrowind for it's depth. I remember grinding out a constant effect heal ring that enabled me to walk around in the day as a vampire. Using fly spells to get around the map with no markers to tell me where to go.
I tried morroblivion, but it wasn't like that. I am under the impression that openmw is aiming to actually be morrowind, but new. Is this correct?
Basically I want to play morrowind with better animations, graphics, and framerate.

Re: Openmw and Skywind
OpenMW is not a new game itself, it ist just an engine. In other words, the actual game is the game assets and game rules, but those data need some sort of programming to be able to run on a computer (that's what we call an "engine"). What OpenMW does is replace the old programming by Bethesda with a new and better one. However, the game itself remains unchanged, so eventually you will be able to do anything you were in the original game (because it is the original game), except for bugs obviously.
If people want to change the game itself, they can do so via mods. OpenMW aims to support all existing mods that comes as ESM/ESP files, but it will be even more moddable than vanilla Morrowind. While OpenMW will not improve upon the graphics or animation, because that's outside the projects' domain, modders will be able to provide modern game assets and improve the look of Morrowind.

Not to step on any toes, just to clarify:HiPhish wrote:OpenMW is not a new game itself, it ist just an engine. In other words, the actual game is the game assets OpenMW aims to support all existing mods that comes as ESM/ESP files
OpenMW aims to support all mods NOT created using outside programs such as MWSE or MWE. This of course includes the graphics enhanced, but since it is using updated technology to represent the assets it has the potential to outdo MGE.

Re: Openmw and Skywind
Yes, exactly. The reason MWSE or MGE exist in the first place is because it is impossible to add new graphics or scripting features to the original engine directly, so they had to be inserted that way. OpenMW does not suffer from that limitation anymore.

Re: Openmw and Skywind
Sorry for the stupid question. How modding capabilities will be wider? OpenMW can support physics like in Skyrim, face generator? Modding will be more direct, than in vanilla?
That would be cool. Then OpenMW will be much better than skaywind.

Re: Openmw and Skywind
OpenMW is called OpenMW because it is open-source. That means that anyone can contribute code to the project. The whole engine - everything - is open. That means that if you know how to code a face generator, you can write the code and it could be implemented in OpenMW. Same with physics. Same with shaders. You could overhaul the interface, the leveling system, you could add features or remove them.Bulbulator wrote:How modding capabilities will be wider? Theoretically, anything that can be coded is possible because the source code is public.
Look at it like this. Suppose you were given a Nissa Versa. It's a cool car and all, but you kinda wished it was a Mercedes Benz S-Class. Well, you can kinda make your Versa look like an S-Class. Change the wheels, add a new grill, switch out the steering wheel, hell, change the dashboard front... but no matter how hard you're trying, it will never measure up to what you really want.
Now along comes the OpenCar team and says: "Screw this. We're gonna build our own car. And it's going to be better than anything you've seen! Everyone is invited. You want to have a better chassis? You can do that. You want a different engine? If you have one, shove it in. You want four doors instead of two? Grab the dremel because we have some cutting to do!"
So if you're asking: "Can we do x?" The answer is: "That depends if there is someone willing to code for it."

Very Cool. I hope modmakers using OpenMW implement everything that we only dreamed of before.

This probably should be put into the FAQ. Very good explanation of how it works for the DAU'sOkulo wrote: OpenMW is called OpenMW because it is open-source.
