As the title says, is this actually possible? I'm trying to play it using my pc as the host and my macbook as the client, but from steam i can only open the normal game. Is there a way around this?

Add it to Steam as a non-Steam game.

Install OpenMW to morrowind's root directory and replace Morrowind's .exe with OpenMW's. Steam will run OpenMW and say you are in-game Morrowind.

When you say "install OpenMW to Morrowind's root directory", does it mean installing it in the Morrowind folder or in the Common folder? Do you rename the exe into Morrowind.exe?

I wouldn't do any of those things. You'll get Steam to tell you that you're playing Morrowind, but it'll leave your installation in a mess. It's much easier just to add it as a non-Steam game.
