Performance Questions (Tips Welcome!)

Post by Shinino »

Hi, I just set up OpenMW and loaded a ton of mods. I made sure everything is compatible and there are no obvious conflicts. I load up into Seyda Neen and I'm averaging about 20-40 FPS on a Ryzen 5 1600x and a Geforce GTX1080.

I know that the performance issues are caused BY the mods, I'm looking primarily to see what mods I can safely remove (or replace with others) without heavily impacting graphics or gameplay. Example: If Children of Morrowind has a huge performance hit but doesn't really add anything to the game, I want to know so I can remove it.

I'll put a pastebin with my load order here in a bit.

Vurt's mods tend to kill FPS pretty bad.

Also setting water reflections to off in the video quality settings tends to help a lot.

Is there a good alternative for Vurt's mods that still look good?

This is my tree setup:

I found those to be more close to vanilla and perform better than vurt's one.

Also, you should run Ordenador on your textures, some authors forget to generate mipmaps and it can really shred your performance and cause stutter.

Okay, I have Ordenador -- not entirely sure how to use it though :)

I run it with those settings.
You have to point it to you game texture path.
Or if you use OpenMW multiple mod folder function, point it to where you store those mods.

Did that, still getting about 20-30 fps in open areas, 15-20 in towns. I'll try the trees next. I'm wondering if preloading might help (16GB). I'm sure the issue is 'too many mods doing too much stuff' though :)

It is hard to give advices without openmw.cfg and profilier (F3) results.
Usually a problem comes from mods that add a lot of new objects to scene (like Morrowind Rebirth), or add a lot of new NPCs to towns - OpenMW handles collisions in the main thread, so a CPU power is not enough to get high FPS.

That's my OpenMW.cfg -- Is there a way to get my F3 output from outside of the game, like in a log?

IIRC, no. Just take a screenshot.
