When I start OpenMW it doesn't take me to the launcher window it just starts the game and goes right into some random character, when I hit escape it has all of the options except for loading and saving, so all I can do is exit the game.

The launcher is a separate program: openmw-launcher.
openmw itself is the game-engine and will launch right into the game if properly setup.

Sounds like maybe a new game is being started? Save won't be there until you finish character creation and, I just found out, neither will load until you have a saved game. (Load is there even without any saved games in original Morrowind.)

To the poster, have you played original Morrowind before? Character creation comes a little after starting the game.
