Even running 800 x 600 all images are nearly indecipherable running on elementary OS (linux derivative) on my 64-bit HP AMD media center PC.
Works fine under Windows 7 Pro on a different 64-bit machine.
Any suggestions?
I was under the impression that WINE was not needed. Am I mistaken?

Do you have proper / up to date graphic drivers?
Re: Graphics "Scrambled" Beyond Recognition on Linux
Wine is definitively not needed, that's one of the big points of this project.
Re: Graphics "Scrambled" Beyond Recognition on Linux
I now have the right driver installed for my graphics card -- which is not new. It's a GeForce 6150SE nForce 430/integrated/SSE2 and I have the driver installed for 6 series Nvdia cards and higher.
Am I toast or is there a chance to make this work?

It's really hard to diagnose that setup. If there's any way you could try running it in ubuntu with the tested nVidia driver that might tell us more? We have no way of telling what the quality of video drivers is on Elementary OS. Does Steam/Half-Life 2 work for you?
Re: Graphics "Scrambled" Beyond Recognition on Linux
According to Wikipedia, that chip supports OpenGL 2.1, which should be sufficient to render OpenMW correctly. In other words, yes, there is a chance it could work. As raevol said, we need more information in order to diagnose the issue.
What driver did you install, and from what source?
Can you run glxgears (from the mesa-utils package)?

First, can you run any other game or OpenGL application with problems? This will prove that you have the ability run OpenGL applications.
Second, show us the output of 'glxinfo'.
Thirdly, collect the logs that OpenMW produces and post them here.
To answer you questions, you run the Linux binaries on Linux because they were made for Linux. This project wouldn't exist if you had to use wine. And finally, it runs fine (as to be expected for pre-1.0 software) for many people on a variety of Linux distributions.
