Having trouble running in Ubuntu

Hi, I have been looking for solutions to this and it looks like I am the only one with this sort of problem.

I bought Morrowind on Steam on Windows, and used a flash drive to move the data files and ini to my laptop which runs on Ubuntu. Then I installed the package for OpenMW. It asks me where the data files are, and I tell it the location. The launcher starts up, and I click on the Play button. The loading screen comes up, and then the game crashes. According to the terminal it is a segmentation error.

The Ogre log doesn't give me any insight, but maybe it will help someone else understand why I am having this problem:

I have really no clue what is going on regarding this thread. Seems like all 32 bit builds for Linux are suddenly broken. However if you get a segfault, we could try to diagnose it a bit more. Could you try to run OpenMW under the debugger and get a backtrace?

Start OpenMW by entering this into a terminal:

gdb --args ./openmw --debug

(you may need to install gdb first)

Then enter:

run

and after the crash:

bt

After entering bt you should have a lot text in the console (assuming there actually was a crash). That is what we need to see.

The window didn't actually closed this time, but it said the same error so I'm guessing it 'crashed'. Is that a feature of the debugger?

Other people using Ogre-based projects who have run into similar problems get told it's because of a graphics driver bug, since the shader should never crash with input. So maybe updating your graphics card driver fixes this problem for you?

Alright, I am trying that now. It's actually crashing even faster than before, but I probably did something wrong. I have never installed proprietary drivers on Ubuntu before.

This is so terrible. I am googling like crazy and am so frustrated :(
Is it my hardware? I am using an HP Pavilion dv6000 (a 5-year old computer). Is that why I am having such troubles?

Looks like your nvidia driver is loaded (hence getting to X) but the glx (3d part) isn't loaded or wrong version. Have a peak at your X log in /var/log and see what it says.
