I think Lua script would make a great choice for a lot of the dehardcoding work that needs to be done. Modularize the hell out of a lot of the gameplay logic into Lua scripts/create a backbone for dynamic features (much like DLLs but obviously with the compatibility across different systems). This might then enable easier development of a two server/flexible client solution.
