A tale of two MP mods - openMW/TES3MP and Skyrim Together

Not about OpenMW? Just about Morrowind in general? Have some random babble? Kindly direct it here.

A tale of two MP mods - openMW/TES3MP and Skyrim Together

Post by silentthief »

This is a little more exposure for openMW on Zaric Zhakaron's channel, but in the vid he also discusses a multiplayer mod for skyrim. There are a number of differences, most notably that the skyrim mod is granting paid early access, and the mod is based off the idea of an external program scripting an NPC in the other players game. I bring it up because it not only has praise for openMW but also as a comparison on how lucky we are with the project we have here that people sometimes forget just how bad these things can be implemented:

Holy cow, Skyrim Together team has almost $25k income per month from Patreon!
And looks like Bethesda has no legal complaints about it...

Sorry to disappoint you, but you are late to the party.
The video that you linked is almost two weeks old now.
You can go explore around the internet if you want to see what happened.
I do however think it is very good that OpenMW / TES3MP got more attention because of that.

They got up to $33k/mo and then Bethesda sent them a letter saying that they better stop blocking access to the closed beta behind a paywall and they got caught out stealing SKSE code without permission. After a PR shitshow, they've taken down the closed beta and are cleaning up their act, but it remains to be seen if they'll be entirely above-board when they start the open beta. They're not all bad actors, though - Ace works on both projects, so hopefully, between the recent mess and him being a positive influence, everything will work out mostly okay.

This is interesting, Bethesda saying "let people have it" instead of "stop making it".

I've not seen the text of the letter/email/SD-card-glued-to-carrier-pidgeon, but I think the implication was that they'd follow up with a C&D and claim the Patreon money already collected if ST didn't comply, so it wasn't exactly a case of "let people have it".

The original post that started it all, ST "stealing" SKSE source code:
https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/com ... urce_code/

From the original creator of Skyrim Together who got kicked out by the person accused of "stealing" SKSE code:
https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/com ... of_skyrim/

Then the whole OpenMW/TES3MP 'spin' on the situation:
https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/com ... lity_of_a/

This last thread is where DavidC, Ananace and myself took time to talk about how things could be and putting to bed other nonsense. It should be fare to mention that Ananace is a ST dev too.

I believe the last thread was the reason why we had the thread here: OpenMW: The Way Forward, someone read these and got excited.

Nope, DassiD confirmed he hadn't seen those. He had just independently come across cc9cii's videos.

The way I see it, we should encourage Skyrim and Fallout fans to help develop OpenMW, and potentially work on experimental branches for it where they reimplement their desired features and mechanics, but we shouldn't consider expanding OpenMW's official scope to cover anything specific to other games until one of those branches becomes really impressive.

I think it's a reasonable way of getting new excited contributors while maintaining sanity, and I hope no one objects to it.

I am also of the opinion that the experimental branches should keep in close contact with upstream (OpenMW), because the groundwork done in supporting the other games has direct application in OpenMW 1.0 such as updated NIF support. It would mean that modders could use updated tools to create assets for OpenMW that would only work for oblivion, Skyrim or fallout.

I consider that a positive thing!

Of course. All of the stuff directly useful and relevant to core OpenMW should be implemented in it instead, and the experimental branches should remain in constant contact and cooperation with OpenMW.
