Not about OpenMW? Just about Morrowind in general? Have some random babble? Kindly direct it here.

Steam Play (Proton) - Valve officially supports Wine

Post by Ace (SWE) »

So Valve just decided to release an update to their Steam Play design, using a Wine packaging they've decided to name Proton. Steam for Linux now allows you to run every single Windows game through it, though the list of officially supported games is rather minimal now at first;
  • Beat Saber
  • Bejeweled 2 Deluxe
  • Doki Doki Literature Club!
  • DOOM
  • DOOM II: Hell on Earth
  • DOOM VFR
  • Fallout Shelter
  • FATE
  • FINAL FANTASY VI
  • Geometry Dash
  • Google Earth VR
  • Into The Breach
  • Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012
  • Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013
  • Mount & Blade
  • Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
  • NieR: Automata
  • PAYDAY: The Heist
  • QUAKE
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
  • Star Wars: Battlefront 2
  • Tekken 7
  • The Last Remnant
  • Tropico 4
  • Ultimate Doom
  • Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Dark Crusade
  • Warhammer® 40,000: Dawn of War® - Soulstorm
You can enable it for all your games though, and it'll allow you to use the full Steamworks API through there, so the overlay is still provided by Linux Steam, as is Steam Input for controllers.
And best of all, playing games with it will count as a Linux sale.

Steam Play Announcement wrote:So, two years ago, we started an effort to improve the quality and performance of Windows compatibility solutions for Steam games. A lot of our work has been in the form of supporting Wine and other existing compatibility projects. We have also been integrating these tools into the Steam client to provide the same simple plug-and-play experience offered by regular Linux games.

Modifications to Wine are submitted upstream if they're compatible with the goals and requirements of the larger Wine project; as a result, Wine users have been benefiting from parts of this work for over a year now. The rest is available as part of our source code repository for Proton and its modules.

In addition to that, we've been supporting the development of DXVK, the Direct3D 11 implementation based on Vulkan; the nature of this support includes:
  • Employing the DXVK developer in our open-source graphics group since February 2018
  • Providing direct support from our open-source graphics group to fix Mesa driver issues affecting DXVK, and provide prototype implementations of brand new Vulkan features to improve DXVK functionality
I guess this means we can officially support installing Morrowind through Linux steam to get the game data now.

Community is working on making a big list of which games work with Proton.
If you tested / played any games, report your findings here:

And look here to see whole list that community made so far:

Legend of Grimrock II seems to work just fine. :)

Don't need my wine version of steam now... woohoo!

This is certainly a very nice thing to see Valve do. It's a bit bitter sweet though that one of the biggest proponents of Linux is also a supplier of pretty nasty DRM (online server permission checks, background apps running unnecessarily). Would be neat if GOG could jump in on this train.

Indeed I also hope for that. I don't like the fact that games that run on DOSBox are only offered for Windows when DOSBox has MacOS and Linux versions.

To be fair, it'd be neat if GOG could actually release Galaxy for Linux as well.
