Have you considered the mate desktop? I am currently using Linux Mint with mate and am kinda happy with it.
Mate (as a gnome 2) fork is still quite flexible (see screenshot). Mine is heavily customised and looks completely different from the default desktop.
I can't really recommend Linux Mint. They have a tendency of making their systems look and behave like Windows. Apparently nobody every told them that Windows sucks at usability.
With Ubuntu dropping their "not invented here" BS, I am seriously considering going back to it for my next box.

*rubs hands together* I have such sights to show you!Zini wrote:With Ubuntu dropping their "not invented here" BS, I am seriously considering going back to it for my next box.
To be fair, there are many butt-hurt KDE fans out there wondering why Ubuntu just didn't go with KDE since they too were looking at convergence and KDE (Qt) on mobile platform.
Anyway, I think 'Crisis in Ubuntu land' is over-the-top, there is no crisis as Mark pretty much sealed the deal.
There are plenty of Ubuntu flavours for everyone if you don't like Gnome3.
https://www.ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/flavours
Which are all compatible with our PPA.Edubuntu — Ubuntu for education
Ubuntu GNOME — Ubuntu with the GNOME desktop environment
Kubuntu — Ubuntu with the K Desktop environment
Ubuntu Kylin — Ubuntu localised for China
Lubuntu — Ubuntu that uses LXDE
Mythbuntu — Designed for creating a home theatre PC with MythTV
Ubuntu Studio — Designed for multimedia editing and creation
Xubuntu — Ubuntu with the XFCE desktop environment
Ubuntu MATE — Ubuntu with the MATE desktop environment
Ubuntu Budgie — Simplicity & Elegance – Budgie desktop powered by Ubuntu
Re: Crisis in Ubuntu land
You just need to dowload some live CDs and try them out.
Here's a list of desktop environments sorted by recommendations with basic pros/cons from users:
https://www.slant.co/topics/343/~best-l ... vironments
Linux Mint has Cinnamon.
Bodhi runs with Moksha (an e17 fork).
Elementary has Pantheon.
Solus has Budgie.
Deepin (Chinese but internationalised) has the Deepin Desktop Environment.

Yeaaa I'm being melodramatic.psi29a wrote:Anyway, I think 'Crisis in Ubuntu land' is over-the-top, there is no crisis as Mark pretty much sealed the deal.
On another note, is it true there's no option to "shutdown" from within Gnome3, unless you press an arbitrary and undocumented key on the keyboard?

Not sure where you read that but I can safely assure you that there is indeed a "Shutdown".raevol wrote:On another note, is it true there's no option to "shutdown" from within Gnome3, unless you press an arbitrary and undocumented key on the keyboard?
Here, it's the highlighted 'Power' symbol:
Re: Crisis in Ubuntu land
Ah wow that menu looks completely different from the youtube video I watched. Good to know, thank you!psi29a wrote:Here, it's the highlighted 'Power' symbol:
Edit: Also wow, that's a lot of tabs!

Re: Crisis in Ubuntu land
Mind posting the URL? I want to see what kind of anti-Gnome3 propaganda is out there.
Meh, I use both chrome and firefox... (one for personal and one for work), each with so many tabs. I organize my workflow in virtual-desktops. First VD is my communication (pidgin and work email), second VD is CLion or PyCharm with GnomeTerminal (with as many tabs open), third VD is chrome and 4th (and beyond) are scratch... like playing Arx Fatalis.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LBEcmZD7qM&t=513s <-- looks like it's from 2011. I did manage to get Gnome3 running on a virtualbox, and it's actually pretty nice. It certainly has its thorns, but so does Unity, as much as I like it. The bad news is I also got XFCE running and now I remember how much I loved that DE...
When I was working I would use 2 desktops sometimes, but on 2 monitors. I am obsessive about closing tabs, the more clutter on my screen the more flustered I become. But I have a carefully curated set of bookmarks and file folders...

Re: Crisis in Ubuntu land
Then perhaps https://xubuntu.org/ is for you? Also compatible with out PPA.
Re: Crisis in Ubuntu land
Xubuntu is probably my favorite Ubuntu flavor. Just a regular-ass desktop. Not as ugly as Lubuntu and less extra stuff than Ubuntu Mate. It is incredibly boring in the best way in my opinion.
