OpenMW PPA full of treasures

Post by majki »

Hey guys

I just installed Ogre3d 1.9 thanks to your wonderful PPA! I wish to thank you for this, if one is an artist, not coder, getting Ogre3d working on Linux is always problematical - I mean compilations and such!

Thank you very much!

Also - I would like to ask, if this is possible, to add to your PPA 2 more things Ogre3d related, which are also problematical to install on Linux.

OgreMeshy - http://yosoygames.com.ar/wp/ogre-meshy/ Really nice tool to load Ogre3d .mesh files and animations
Ogitor - http://www.ogitor.org/ really nice, actively developed World Builder for Ogre3d.

If this happened, that would be awesome solution for artists interested in Ogre3d in general.

You're welcome...

what release of Ubuntu are you using?

Please note, that when a release goes EoL from Ubuntu, the packages will also be removed from the PPA.

As for other packages, are they somehow OpenMW related or would be used in helping OpenMW in some way?

Do these packages have maintainers already to push these into Debian?

I'm on Saucy.

Well - I'm not very familiar with OpenMW.

Meshy is for loading Ogre3d meshes animations. If you are making content for Ogre3d powered game, this is great sandbox. You can load model along with materials and animations, which can be played. Like this:

This is gold.

About Ogitor - well - this is world builder. You got your level/scene in Blender and you want to plug it into game engine using Oger3d - Ogitor is very handy then.

I dunno if you guys are making actual content for MW, so dunno if content-related things would be useful for you. But this would help a lot in popularising Ogre3d in general.

Truth be told, all of this should be in Ubuntu repo by default :(

EDIT
Do these packages have maintainers already to push these into Debian?
No idea.

Are you the creator of these? If not, have you tried contacting the developers and asking if they are interested in having in Debian?

libogre-1.9 is in Debian at the moment, and is in next release of Ubuntu (Trust).

My plate is full at the moment, but perhaps I can help.

Is there any groundwork done? Anyone make any packages already? This the bulk of the work and of course, the willingness to maintain it.

Well, Ogitor devs has no resources to put their app on PPA. I have not contected OgreMeshy devs yet. But I guess they will say the same :(

Ogitor has only Windows package - Linux has to be compiled.
Meshy similar - but they have static bins for Kubuntu 12.10 done http://yosoygames.com.ar/wp/ogre-meshy/

both projects look awesome, and both would be great for Debian/Ubuntu.

My plate is full at the moment too, but they look very interesting. Maybe I can try packaging those in a few weeks.

How things normally work is that the software is packaged into Debian, and Ubuntu pulls from debian. It's somewhat difficult to get it into debian (very high standards for licensing and program performance), so some developers instead put it in a PPA (a place for "personal" and "private" bulds) either while the software is still under development or while they are waiting for Debian to approve things. OpenMW did that with the OpenMW PPA you're using. Going forward, however, the newest versions of Ubuntu will have all those tools as defaults now that they are accepted into Debian.

Are you saying, that Ogitor and OgreMeshy are going to be included in Debian/Ubuntu soon?

He said he/we would try... inclusion into Debian will take awhile, but at least there might be a PPA package. It all depends on if we can find the time.

It took half a year to get openmw into Debian, and that is just experimental... it will take longer before it finally reaches unstable.

Well, more easy available for artists tools Ogre3d-related, more attractive Ogre3d is in general, that means more potential devs and so on.

Currently - hard to expect level designers or modellers in general to work with tech that requires tons of "commandline work".

But you already made life of many ppl easier with packaging Ogre3d :)
