Best Game engines

Not about OpenMW? Just about Morrowind in general? Have some random babble? Kindly direct it here.

I really want to try Unity, it seems top notch. Sadly, there are no developer tools for Linux. They have a SDK for Windows and OSX but not Linux so for me, it is a deal breaker which is a HUGE pity. I really want to work with it.

Unity is much more than an 'engine', it is a middle-ware that handles multiple things (2D, 3D and Sound) at once while 'engines' like TechX, Ogre3D, Crystalspace and etc. are just 3D engines.

Don't forget Unigine, a very modern middle-ware:

There are many other engines, many open source:

unigine, AFAIK, appears to be a terrible solution, all working in proprietary format.

Care to explain? It supports many formats, such as COLLADA, Blender and Maya3d.

At least they have a Linux SDK which is more than I can say for Unity3D at the moment.

Can anyone list an (or more) Linux SDK, free or non-free?

Update: There is Leadworks, it isn't ready yet, but is an SDK that is in the works for Linux.

^-- It too is proprietary like Unigine.

Well, you probably know more than me. I personally couldn't get it, I have written to the developers but they have not answered me.

That is something else and you're right... the non-free aspect is a huge discouraging wall to get over/around.

I would love the idea to tinker for free/non-commercial reasons and then scale-up (with license fees) when making some for-profit. I'm still looking for something viable.

In the mean time, it is projects like OpenMW with Ogre3D, SDL2 and OpenAL that is at least something to work with.

If someone could fully utilize the HydroEngine, that would be kickass.

I have no idea. But the game Hydrophobia was far too short. The engine was used for that, best water I ever seen in a game. Its too bad they didnt really make a game to its full potential with it.

What about Tesseract the new Cube engine? As far as I understood it is easier than Cube2 since it has less rendering modes, but still it looks nicer.

For real time strategy Spring is great.
