There's always room for MOAR

Last week's news of an asset replacement project was well received. A whole bunch of people reported in, offering not just their skills, but also their opinion on the exact nature of the project and any possible legal ramifications, what with OpenMW being around and all. In the end they settled on making this project (tentatively called Morrowind Original Asset Replacement, a.k.a. MOAR) a mod for Morrowind, but the OpenMW engine should be working fine with it too. If you want to contribute too, why don't you check out their brand new project site or their guideline thread? Or just join the discussion thread and see what people are saying.

But back to OpenMW in particular. Some more work was done on the user interface. On the hardware there has been some experimentation with support for gamepads. The experiment resulted in a semi-victory: Wireless 360 gamepads worked fine, but PS3 dualshock controllers did not. That means that support isn't quite in yet and that more deliberation on how to handle joystick input is required.

On the software side, various fixes have been done, too. The centering of this and that line of text, resizing buttons here, tooltips there; stuff that's pretty much in your face every time you play just needs to work well. Small niggles need to be ironed out. For example, you can now use the scroll wheel to leaf through the books and you can properly place tooltips on the local map, just like in vanilla Morrowind. Combat has also been expanded a bit. If an NPCs fatigue reaches zero, they will get knocked out. But not just that - you will be able to pick their pockets when they're out cold.

All these little things add up and considering that MyGUI just released an update that fixes a memory leak in OpenMW, there is talk among the developers of pushing out OpenMW 0.32.0 soon. And that's always good to hear.

Is there a certain build to use for controller support so that I could do some testing? I have a wired X/D controller, which could be useful for a variety of tests, but I don't get any indication that it's working in the latest nightly build.

You're free to check out my github repo, but I should have a built with better joystick support soon. I just got back to school so I'm a bit busy, but there's not much left to do so I'll push it out shortly.

About the gamepads.

Antimicro is the best multi-platform program to map keyboard/mouse to a gamepad that I've seen. It's also GPL, so maybe you can take a look at the code.

I really do not Like the initialization. Part of what makes a good name is for it to be searchable. Even MOAR morrowind in google is not going to be informative. Better off tacking Project or something to the name. MOARP

Talk about it. Every time I search for something LaTeX related that isn't about a specific package I want to punch Leslie Lamport in the face for trying to be clever with the name. Same goes for Wine as well, but it's usually easier to find Wine related results because "wine" (the drink) and computer software usually don't match together on search results.

Part of what makes something a good name is not just searchability, but also how easy it is to remember.

Counter-example to EasyKill criticism: Oblivion's Voices Of the Imperial Legion Amalgamated. I'll also point to Morrowind Script Extender, which shortens to a generic "MSE", which also stands for Microsoft Security Essentials, Mean Squared Error and Money Savings Expert. Searching for "Morrowind MSE" works fine, though. HiPhish's example doesn't quite work because LaTeX is the main program, while MOAR isn't. In this case, you would be searching for 'Morrowind MOAR', which would yield the correct result.,

dont bother with native dualshock 3 support. anyone using one on a windows pc should already be emulating xinput so dont worry about spending time supporting a broken way to use the controller in the first place
