Ability to make OpenMW portable on Windows

Post by Annorax »

Hello all,

I recently logged an enhancement request to make OpenMW fully portable (ie the ability to control where config/save files go, etc...) It was closed duplicate of a bug from what looks like 5 years ago.

https://gitlab.com/OpenMW/openmw/-/issues/2491

Is there a way to vote or prioritize fixes like this? This sounds like a pretty simple fix and it was raised 5 years ago.

Thank you.

The best way to hurry it along is to provide a patch or pull/merge request. Work gets done on OpenMW when and where someone volunteers their time to work on it, so if nobody is doing this, it means they don't want to, don't feel comfortable changing that code themselves, or see something else as more important. However, if someone provides code that can be easily checked over, it's more likely to get added.

Any attempt anyone's made to design a portable OpenMW for Windows has either had major design issues or got abandoned early on. Unfortunately, it wasn't really something that was thought of early on, so there's not a hugely clean way of actually doing it now.
