I like a lot how the world map in OpenMW already provides much more detail than the original Morrowind one, and I love that it can be even further increased by editing the settings.cfg, but it will probably always be a compromise between detail and overview. Unless it would be possible to zoom in and out of it, maybe even up to the point where the transition between local and world map is seamless. Using the mouse wheel on the map window would be the best way to do that.
Also, it would be great if the image undiscovered world had a higher resolution, because it gets very blocky with larger map cell sizes.
Of course, these things can wait until after 1.0.
Keep up the great work, guys!
Zoomable World Map
Re: Zoomable World Map
Do you mean something like the Morrowind Online Map provided by UESP (http://mwmap.uesp.net/)?
That would be nice indeed, although it may hit performance. IIRC, the loading of door markers can become very costy in its current implementation... Here you go:

Re: Zoomable World Map
Well, similar to that online one, yes, but I would not mind if local and world map would still be separate from one another as they are now, but at some point they would switch more or less seamlessly. I don't know if it would be required to expand the local map boundaries, but then the question would be how the transition would be handled if the currently viewed part of the world map is not near the player's position. Well, having a zoomable world map with greater detail than the vanilla one would already be a big improvement, the local map could still be kept separate.
