One example I can think of is to compare the two Daggerfall engine replacement projects I'm aware of: the XL Engine and Daggerfall Unity. XL Engine is currently closed source with the developer stating that he will open source it when it is ready. That was two years ago, the dev went silent around July last year and there appears to be no indication of when the next update will be available. Conversely, the Daggerfall Unity project was open source from the start and has seen a lot of development in the short amount of time since it started, multiple programmers are working together to get it finished and has an active modding community too.
XLEngine vs Daggerfall Unity is the exact example I had in mind.
XL engine did get open sourced if I understand correctly: https://github.com/luciusDXL/XL-Engine
Unfortunately it was just too little too late. He lost the PR momentum he had and no new devs joined up, from what I understand.
This only confirms that while it's been open-sourced, not many people even know about it. He should have made it public from the start.

I'm sad for the XLEngine's fall because Unity is proprietary and so Daggerfall Unity isn't strictly speaking a free software :(

Well, guess you could always do an OpenMW on it and turn it into Daggerfall Godot (he says not exactly seriously!).

But yeah, pity about the XL-Engine. Even if Unity isn't open source, at least Daggerfall Unity is (and decently promoted). Not exactly ideal, but better than nothing.

How does it go?

Any progress?

Please release the code so others can check it out, in this way it will advance much more faster :)

I am still very much active, checking OpenMW and the code changes out on a regular basis. Once I am able to release something substantial, I will. To be honest, right know I am busy with gaming, tried out that awful Elder Scrolls MMO and some other games. Maybe cc9cii evolved his physics implementation further at this point. I probably should not have openly communicated any work on Open-Oblivion.

Would be nice if someone made a pull request to OpenMW with their work on adding TES4 and TES5 NIF/ESM/ESP/Terrain support. :) (pretty please?)

Could you imagine conquering all of fallouts previous locations in the name of Ceasar's Legion? In OpenMW? Fallout Rebuilt? If only we humans lived longer.
