Paid bug hunting for the bullet impasse

Anything related to PR, release planning and any other non-technical idea how to move the project forward should be discussed here.

Paid bug hunting for the bullet impasse

Post by ElderTroll »

Hey Everyone,

It's been a long time. Really cool work this last year. I'm really excited to see magic combat implemented. I think version 1.0 will definitely be finished by the end of 2014.

Chris's work is at a stand still because of that Bullet bug. I think I read that the Bullet Team is trying to merge features over to the next major version. So there is no priority in fixing the bug on their side. Also, who knows how many other projects would benefit from this bug getting fixed?

Why not commission a bug hunt to fix the problem? I'd contribute 50 USD (I think I've gotten that amount of entertainment from just watching WeirdSexy's commentaries) and there have been many fans of the project who have offered to support the project financially.

Here are some positive things to doing this.

First, it could solve the problem and allow work to continue on Chris's branch.

Second, it would improve Bullet, which many other projects use.

Third, we wouldn't be paying someone to directly work on OpenMW.

Fourth, it provides a way for fans to support the project and open source in general.

To consider:

How important is switching to Chris's improved physics branch?

How much money is needed to encourage developers to fix the bug?

How long would it take before OpenMW could apply the fix? Would we have to wait for the bullet team to release a new version with the fix merged or Chris take a development branch at least to keep working?

Does the community, and Chris specifically, think this is a good idea?

Throw this at the bullet devs, they are more willing to follow cash than OpenMW devs are.

Ask them if they are willing do a paid bug hunt.

I can't do much, but I'd be willing to pitch in. I'd also be willing to make a video for YouTube explaining the situation and requesting our supporters to pitch in as well.

But we would first need to see if the bullet devs are willing to do it and about how much capital we would need to raise to accomplish it.
