How about we do Song of Ice and Fire, starting out with a small, manageable part of the map like the Iron Islands:
Would it be just cool to do this castle?
OpenMW Demo suggestion.

Copyrighted material. And George R.R. Martin is not overly fond of unlicensed fanworks of his stuff (he has a rather tight leash on fanworks, and has even criticized the likes of H.P. Lovecraft for effectively making the Cthulu mythos free to use).GreyFox wrote:How about we do Song of Ice and Fire

Could we do something like The Count of Monte Cristo? It's in the public domain and would offer the chance to make interior cells, exterior cells, land, water, quests, and dialogue.
(I have a feeling the answer is "Absolutely. We await your pull request." )

Song of Ice and Fire. I don´t get what´s up with this. Lineage 2 has a long and boring quest and area with it. Path of Exile has an unique map dedicated to it. And more games feel the need to heavily reference it. Now I´ve read the first two Game of Throne books and watched some of the tv series. But I still don´t get it why it needs to be in every game.
Let´s stay out of this George R.R Martin craze. Even when successful game companies do it, it turns out kinda meh. And we already got plenty of Song of Ice and Fire.
That being said, castle looks cool.

It is interesting to know in that regard that Bethesda nearly did GoT instead of Skyrim back in 2011:

Coming to think of it, I wonder if things like the beheading animation in Skyrim is not the result of some proof of concept art done for the eventual GoT game...

It is more about derivative writing GRRM is worried about, not fan art in general. There is a Skyrim GoT mod ongoing since 2012 unsurprisingly, and they have not run into legal issues so far. Youtube is full of reviews which use high res GoT scenes in reviews, synopsis and the like, with none of them being taken down so far for years.Chris wrote: Copyrighted material. And George R.R. Well lets not start an opinion war, because it is what it comes down too. Fact is GoT is popular and steers up a lot of enthusiasm, which makes it easier to recruit people if you want to start a project based on it. I don't think everyone is playing so many games he would think that its overdone, and there are enough people who can't get enough of it.DestinedToDie wrote:Song of Ice and Fire. Lack of action doesn't mean a lack of caring. It just means they either don't know or haven't gotten around to dealing with it yet. Just look at the Lord of the Rings mod that had been in development for years until WB(?) got wind of it and they were forced to stop. And excerpts and such for reviews are covered under Fair Use (and when it comes to YouTube, they don't have to be taken down anyway, they can just have all monetization redirected to the rights holder).GreyFox wrote:There is a Skyrim GoT mod ongoing since 2012 unsurprisingly, and they have not run into legal issues so far. True, though HBO is no WB.Chris wrote: Lack of action doesn't mean a lack of caring. It just means they either don't know or haven't gotten around to dealing with it yet. I´ll give it that Game of Thrones has a lot of fans, which might garner extra attention.
But since the discussion about Warner Bros and copyright seems to be ongoing - would you rather make a demo which´s legal rights are owned by George R.R Martin fellas than make one that is free and original? Even if they don´t file DMCA claim or they give us thumbs up and tell us to go for it, they will be the ones who own it at the end of the day.
