This is a feature for the very far future, but in my opinion is a very cool idea to support several players to fight together through the internet.
Each player has their own history line and quests, but you could play side by side with a friend, and we can make specific quests to multiplayer too.
Could this be done someday?
This would require many major changes in the engine. To me, it seems quiet unlikely that it can be done in a reasonable amount of time.
IMO we should:
a) list all the "Big post 1.0 features"
b) create wiki entry for each
c) list all work needed to do this features
I'm not going to mince words on this topic -
I would much rather use time to code advanced graphics features and extra support for physics and gameplay than networking the game.
Hell, I'd even take a crack at AI programming before network coding. To me, it's asking for a disaster and a Sisyphean task.

The lack of network support in near future is a sad thing, but well it's not always easy.
