I've always, always gotten massive framerate drops when walking through massive particle pumes, including the ones in the propylon chambers. Not even shadows related for me, but now that I think about it, I should try to see if shadows make those things worse for me.

That might be specific to whatever Bullet build the OpenMW OSX nightlies are being compiled against.

You're being willfully ignorant and we're going in circles because of it. They could have implemented the star sign bonuses any way they wanted. They chose to make them as abilities so that they display on the HUD, and changed how abilities work slightly to avoid causing other problems. It's not a h...

If that "stuff that'll have to be ripped out wholesale post-1.0" is "literally how Morrowind is designed as a game" then it kind of has to be there for 1.0 to happen.

edit: Also, on my system, I am bouncing off my vsync cap, except on scenes where the physics bar is going over a sliver. So performance is definitely physics bound for me. I just want to drop items on the ground rapidly. I can already pick them up rapidly, why can't I do the reverse? Dragging and dropping can become painful when you do it like fifty times.
