It's not that it can't do it but that the image's physical aspect ratio can be arbitrary. For vanilla it's 2:1 even though the content is 4:3. It'll look very wrong if openmw tries to be smart with the scaling.

The almost opaque magic effect particles are caused by improper particle lighting overriding the particle vertex colors and have been a known issue for years. Make sure openmw executable runs on your dedicated video card.
Press F3 twice while in-game (that'll enable the profiler), make a screenshot (press F12) and post it here. It'll be saved to %user Documents/My Games/OpenMW.

You can't use MGE XE with OpenMW. You don't need MGE XE (or rather, MWSE) to make GitD work with OpenMW.

Another thing I noticed in 0.46 is that long-duration destruction spells on my character from like a Dagoth ash ghoul or ash zombie made the destruction particle kind of obscure the first-person view which didn't seem like a problem before. Maybe the alpha is thicker than it used to be? That's also...
