GPL cares about source code, not about binary distribution, right? Hmm... I'm actually not sure how that works out here. Also, the GNU GPL is almost certainly incompatible with Steam's DRM. They would have to do a policy change to allow distribution of GPL software. For example, Desura distributes a lot of GPL games, because there is no DRM that is enforced by the client. Valve doesn't really have a strong motivation ...
